History and Business of Company (this information may include date of incorporation) | |
Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) originally designed its flagship Web site www.yahoo.com to function primarily as a search engine or online navigational guide. The company has transformed www.yahoo.com and its other online properties into Web sites where Internet users can go to find information, communicate with others and purchase merchandise or services. In December 2000, Internet users viewed an average of approximately 900 million Web pages per day on Yahoo]-branded online properties. YHOO's network reaches over 180 million users each month worldwide. During the fourth quarter of 2000, 3,700 customers advertised on Yahoo's Web properties. YHOO offers a subject-based directory of Web sites, which enables Web users to locate and access desired information and services through hypertext links in 14 major categories, including news and media, business and finance, regional, reference, arts and health. A substantial portion of the traffic on YHOO's online properties is directed at communications services such as e-mail, instant messaging and chat rooms, a trend the company expects will continue. YHOO does not charge users for its services. It derives the majority of its revenues from the sale of advertising, promotions, merchandising and direct marketing. YHOO also sells sponsorship agreements, which are typically long-term agreements of up to three years. The company continues to focus significant resources on the development and enhancement of its electronic commerce properties. These properties, such as Yahoo] Shopping, link users with a network of retailers with which the company has relationships. YHOO typically shares in the revenues from Web sales with network-member merchants. Other online properties include broadcast.com, which offers a range of audio and video content as well as services to its corporate customers for live and on demand online events. Yahoo] Digital enables users to watch and listed to broadcasts from top musicians. The company also provides online business services designed to enhance the Web presence of YHOO's clients, including audio and video streaming, store hosting and management, and Web site tools and services. Key elements of YHOO's growth strategy include building on its global customer base by developing Internet properties focused on geographic regions and extending the Yahoo] brand into print and other offline media, as a means of increasing demand for the company's online properties.
