Symantec Corp. (SYMC) makes utility software for business and personal computing. The company provides virus protection, firewall, virtual private network, or VPN, vulnerability management, intrusion detection, remote management technologies and security services to consumers and enterprises around the world. SYMC organizes its business into five major customer segments: Consumer Products, Enterprise Administration, Enterprise Security, Services and Other. Consumer Products provides solutions to individual users, home offices and small businesses. Most of the products that marketed or in development for this segment feature LiveUpdate. This feature enables users to subscribe to easily downloadable content updates including virus definitions, firewall rules, URL databases and uninstall scripts. SYMC's consumer products run primarily on Windows and Macintosh operating systems. SYMC AntiVirus also runs on Palm OS. Enterprise Security provides organizations with technology, services and response capabilities to deal with their specific security needs. In addition to virus protection and filtering products, offerings include intrusion detection, vulnerability management, web access management, and firewalls/VPN protection. The solutions are available on numerous paltforms: gateways, servers and clients (desktop PCs, laptops, mobile devices, and PDAs). At the gateway level, the products run on Windows NT, Solaris, and Linux platforms. The products at the server level operate on Windows NT, UNIX, Linux, and others. At the end user level, the products run on the Windows platform. Enterprise Administration offers remote management solutions which help remote professionals to remain productive while providing companies access to information, applications and data from any location. Services segment provides fee-based technical support and consulting services to enterprise customers to assist them with the planning, design and implementation of enterprise security solutions in the anti-virus and Internet content filtering technologies. Other segment is comprised of sunset products, products nearing the end of their life cycle, and operations from the Visual Cafe and ACT] divested product lines. In December 2000, SYMC acquired AXENT Technologies Inc. (AXENT) in a stock transaction valued at approximately $975 million. AXENT contributed approximately $42 million to the company's total net revenues for FY 2001 (Mar.). INCORPORATED in Delaware in April 1988, and in September 1988, merged C&E Software, Inc. (incorporated in California Sept. 16, 1983). June 1, 1994, acquired Central Point Software, Inc. for 4,029,429 Common shares. In November, 1995, acquired Delrina Corp. In the transaction, Delrina shares were converted into a new class of exchangeable Delrina shares, each exchangeable for one company Common share, or a total of apx. 15,000,000 company Common shares, over a 7-yr. period.
