History and Business of Company (this information may include date of incorporation) | |
Since its formation in 1991, RF Micro Devices, Inc. (RFMD) has devoted itself almost exclusively to the design, development, manufacture and sale of radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for commercial wireless markets. The company has developed and sold integrated circuits for a broad range of applications within these markets, including cellular and PCS phones, cordless telephony, industrial radios, wireless LANs, wireless local loop handsets, wireless security and remote utility meter reading. As part of its focused strategy, RFMD offers a broad range of standard and custom-designed RFICs in an effort to position itself as a one-stop solution for its customers' RFIC needs. RFMD's product offering, which includes amplifiers, mixers, modulators/demodulators and single-chip receivers, transmitters and transceivers, represents a substantial majority of the RFICs required in wireless subscriber equipment. These RFICs perform the transmit and receive functions that are critical to the performance of a wireless phone. RFMD designs its products using four semiconductor process technologies: gallium arsenide heterojunction bipolar, silicon bipolar transistor, silicon germanium and gallium arsenide MESFET. According to the company, gallium arsenide (GaAs) products generally offer better electrical performance, while silicon-based products are less expensive. The company's customers include such leading OEMs as Nokia, Samsung, Motorola and Ericsson. RFMD has an alliance with QUALCOMM to provide advanced power amplifiers for the code division multiple access market. In FY 01 (Mar.) the alliance to include the development of wideband CDMA power amplifier modules. RFMD offers products for a variety of wireless applications. The company's power amplifiers, for instance, are used in cellular and PCS handsets, cordless phones and other devices. Power amplifiers, which provide signal amplification in the transmitter section of a wireless system, are often the most critical RF component in the system, and they are frequently the most expensive as well. RFMD believes its GaAs HBT (heterojunction bipolar transistor) power amplifiers offer several benefits, including low distortion, small size and high efficiency. Other products include quadrature modulators/demodulators, transceivers and low-noise amplifiers. In December 2001, the company announced that it would acquire IBM's Global Positioning System development operation along with intellectual property associated with the operation. RFMD plans to provide GPS solutions to handset manufacturers. INCORPORATED in North Carolina in 1991. OFFICE- 7628 Thorndike Rd., Greensboro, NC 27409-9421 (Tel.: 336-664-1233).
