QLogic Corp. (QLGC) is a designer and supplier of semiconductor and board level input/output, or I/O, and enclosure management products. The company's I/O products provide a high performance interface between computer systems and their attached data storage peripherals, such as hard disks and tape drives, removable disk drives and redundant array of independent disks, or RAID subsystems. Companies such as Sun Microsystems, Inc., IBM, Dell Computer Corp., Compaq Computer Corp., Fujitsu Microelectronics, Inc. and Hitachi Ltd. all use some or all of QLGC's components in the storage and systems solutions they sell. QLGC provides complete I/O technology solutions by designing and marketing single chip controller and adapter board products for both sides of the computer/peripheral device interlink, or 'bus.' In addition, QLGC provides enclosure management products that monitor and communicate management information related to components which are critical to computer system and storage subsystem reliability and availability. Historically, QLGC has targeted the high performance sector of the I/O market, focusing primarily on the SCSI industry standard. It is using its I/O expertise to develop products for emerging I/O standards, such as Fibre Channel. Fibre Channel is experiencing early industry acceptance as a higher performance solution that maintains signal integrity while allowing for increased connectivity between a computer system and its data storage peripherals. The company's designs are based on multiple I/O standards to service the needs of manufacturers and end users of various types of computer systems and components, such as workstations, servers and data storage peripherals. QLGC produces high performance SCSI- based solutions and new I/O solutions based on the emerging Fibre Channel standard, and is leveraging its technological capabilities to provide solutions based on the integrated drive electronics standard, or IDE standard. QLGC markets and distributes its products through a direct sales organization supported by field application engineers, as well as through a network of independent manufacturers' representatives and regional and international distributors. In North America, the company maintains a direct sales force to serve its large original equipment manufacturer customers and multiple outside representatives that are focused on medium and emerging accounts.
