QUALCOMM Inc. (QCOM) is a provider of digital wireless communications products, technologies and services based on the company's technology. QCOM designs, develops, manufactures and markets CDMA subscriber products and designs, develops and markets CDMA chipsets and system software. The company also licenses and receives royalty payments on its CDMA technology from major domestic and international telecommunications equipment suppliers. In addition, the company designs, manufactures and distributes products and provides services for its OmniTRACS system. QCOM's CDMA technology has been adopted as an industry standard for digital cellular, Personal Communications Services and other wireless services. Wireless networks based on the company's current implementation of CDMA technology, referred to as cdmaOne, have been commercially deployed or are under development in more than 41 countries around the world, with 27 countries already in commercial deployments. The CDMA Development Group reports that CDMA carriers have signed nearly 65 million commercial subscribers worldwide, with extensive deployment in the U.S., Japan, Canada, and South Korea. In addition, CDMA networks are planned or deployed in a number of other countries and territories. On July 24, 2000, the company announced it is planning to spin- off its integrated circuit and system software solutions business. The separation will create two separate companies and is designed to speed the worldwide growth and development of CDMA wireless voice and data markets. These companies will focus on critical drivers of growth for the wireless industry. The new company will focus on developing and delivering innovative wireless communications integrated circuits and system software solutions for the world's leading handset and infrastructure manufacturers. QCOM will focus on developing and supporting the growth of CDMA technology and driving the convergence of wireless data applications and Internet access, with the goal of increasing royalties. In addition, the company will further develop its other existing businesses, including QUALCOMM Wireless Systems (OmniTRACS and Globalstar) and QUALCOMM Digital Media (Government Systems, Digital Cinema and Eudora). On Jan. 5, 2001, QCOM announced that it had entered a CDMA modem card license agreement with Qualified Mobile Telecommunications of Seoul, Korea. Under the agreement, Qualified Mobile Telecommunications is authorized to develop and sell CDMA and cdma2000 1xEV modem card products.
