Molex Inc. (MOLX) manufactures electronic, electrical and fiber optic interconnection products and systems; switches; value-added assemblies; and application tooling. The company operates 54 plants in 19 countries. In FY 01 (June), products manufactured and sold outside the U.S. generated 58% of sales. In terms of markets, net revenue was divided in the following manner in FY 01: computers 33%; telecommunications 26%; consumer products 15%; automotive 16%; industrial 6%; and other 4%. MOLX offers more than 100,000 products and serves the automotive, business equipment, computer, computer peripheral, consumer products, industrial equipment, premises wiring, telecommunications and other industries. The worldwide market for electronic connectors, cable assemblies and backplanes was estimated at $30 billion and MOLX has an estimated 8% market share. The company designs, manufactures and distributes electrical and electronic devices such as terminals, connectors, planer cables, cable assemblies, interconnection systems, fiber optic interconnection systems, backplanes and mechanical and electronic switches. Crimping machines and terminal inserting equipment (application tooling) are offered on a lease or purchase basis for the purpose of applying the company's components to the customers' products. MOLX promotes its products through the internet, leading trade magazines, direct mailings, catalogs, other promotional literature and trade shows. MOLX sells its products primarily to original equipment manufacturers and their subcontractors and suppliers. The company's customers include various multinational companies including AT&T, Canon, Cisco, Compaq, Delphi, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Lucent, Motorola, Nokia, Philips, Tellabs, Thomson, Visteon and Xerox. In the U.S. and Canada, MOLX sells its products primarily through direct sales engineers and industrial distributors. Internationally, MOLX sells primarily through its own sales organizations. Outside of the U.S. and Canada, the company also sells its products through manufacturers' representative organizations, some of which act as distributors, purchasing from MOLX for resale. On Dec. 3, 2001, MOLX and iTRACS Corporation, an intelligent IT infrastructure management company, announced a technology partnership to develop a real-time physical layer management solution. The new product, to be branded RealTime, will enable companies to significantly improve network infrastructure service levels, asset utilization and security, while reducing IT management costs.
