KLA-Tencor Corp. (KLAC) supplies process control and yield management solutions for the semiconductor and related microelectronics industries. KLAC's comprehensive portfolio of products, software, analysis, services and expertise is designed to help integrated circuit manufacturers manage yield throughout the entire wafer fabrication process - from research and development to final mass production yield analysis. KLAC offers a broad spectrum of products and services that are used by every major semiconductor manufacturer in the world. These customers turn to the company for in-line wafer defect monitoring; reticle and photomask defect inspection; CD SEM metrology; wafer overlay; film and surface measurement; and overall yield and fab- wide data analysis. These advanced products, coupled with KLAC's unique yield management consulting practice, allows the company to deliver the complete yield management solutions customers need to accelerate their yield learning rates, reduce their yield excursion risks and adopt industry-leading yield management practices. The company was formed in April 1997 through the merger of KLA Instruments Corp. and Tencor Instruments. KLAC markets and sells products to all major semiconductor IC manufacturers and semiconductor wafer manufacturers worldwide. KLAC combines its hardware - consisting of patterned and unpatterned wafer inspection, optical overlay and e-beam metrology, reticle inspection, film measurement and surface metrology tools - with analysis and classification software, into process module control (PMC) solutions. KLAC offers a PMC solution optimized for each of the manufacturing process cells - lithography, etch, deposition and chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) - used in IC production. In November 2001, KLAC stated that it had completed the acquisition of QC Optics, Inc. The companies had signed a definitive agreement under which KLAC would acquire QC for $1 per share, or a total of $3 million. QC Optics designs, manufactures, and markets laser-based defect detection systems for the semiconductor and computer hard disk markets. INCORPORATED in Delaware July 9, 1975; as KLA Instruments Corp.
