Dell Computer Corp. (DELL), a direct computer systems company, provides products and services for customers to build their IT and Internet infrastructures. The company's revenue for FY 01 (Feb.) was $31.9 billion. DELL was founded on a simple concept: by selling personal computer systems directly to customers, the company could best understand customer needs, and efficiently provide the most effective computing solutions to meet those needs. With its direct relationships, DELL strives to make it easier for customers to choose, purchase and support their computing environments. DELL enhances and broadens the fundamental competitive advantages of its direct model by increasingly applying the efficiencies of the Internet to its entire business. Approximately half of its sales are Web-enabled, nearly half of its technical support activities occur online and almost three-quarters of its order-status transactions occur online. The Dell line of computer systems includes PowerEdge servers, PowerApp server appliances, PowerVault storage products, Dell Precision workstations, Latitude and Inspiron notebook computers, and OptiPlex and Dimension desktop computers. DELL arranges for system installation and management, guides customers through technology transitions and provides a range of other services. DELL designs and customizes products and services to the requirements of its customers, and sells an extensive selection of peripheral hardware, including handheld products, and computing software. DELL sells its products and services to large corporate, government, healthcare and education customers, small-to-medium businesses and individuals. DELL conducts operations worldwide and is managed on a geographic basis, with three geographic segments being the Americas (71.7% of consolidated net revenue in FY 01), Europe (20.1%), and Asia-Pacific and Japan regions (8.2%). The Americas segment, which is based in Round Rock, TX, covers the U.S., Canada, South America and Latin America. The European segment, which is based in Bracknell, England, covers the European countries and also some countries in the Middle East and Africa. The Asia-Pacific and Japan segment covers the Pacific Rim, including Japan, Australia and New Zealand, and is based in Singapore. During FY 01, DELL opened new manufacturing facilities in Nashville and Xiamen, China. During the third quarter of FY 02, DELL eliminated approximately 4,000 employee positions worldwide. These actions, together with job eliminations undertaken in FY 01, are expected to result in annual savings of nearly $500 million.
