History and Business of Company (this information may include date of incorporation) | |
Cisco Systems, Inc. (CSCO) is the world's largest supplier of high-performance computer internetworking systems. Its routers and other communication products connect and manage local and wide area networks (LANs and WANs) that employ a variety of protocols, media interfaces, network topologies and cabling systems, enabling customers to connect different computer networks using different hardware and software across offices, countries and continents. CSCO's product family includes backbone and remote access routers, LAN and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switches, dial- up access servers and network management software. High- performance, intelligent routers interconnect networks using different protocols and media. Access routers extend the network to regional sales groups, small satellite offices and individual telecommuters. Routing products include the Gigabit Switch Router (GSR), or the Cisco 12000 Series, providing Internet routing and switching at gigabit speeds. Other Cisco routing products include the 7500 series. Switching products include CSCO's IGX, BPX familites, which integrate switched voice, multiprotocol data and routing over Frame Relay and ATM, and the TGX 8750 core switch, which integrates IP and ATM technologies through Tag Switching for the WAN. Access products include the AS5000 family of access servers, access routers and a Broadband DSL Product Line, which enables network providers (like RBOCs and CLECs) to offer high-speed data and voice services to residential and work at home markets. On April 16, 2001, due to macroeconomic and capital spending issues affecting the networking industry, the company announced a restructuring program to prioritize its initiatives around high- growth areas of its business, focus on profit contribution, reduce expenses, and improve efficiency. This restructuring program included a worldwide workforce reduction, consolidation of excess facilities, and restructuring of certain businesses. On August 23, 2001, CSCO announced several organizational changes designed to align the company's focus around changing customer requirements and emphasize the company's advantages as the communications market and industries consolidate. These changes include moving from the company's existing line of business structure to centralized engineering and marketing organizations. The new engineering organization will focus on 11 new technology groups, while marketing will focus on communicating Cisco's unique technology differentiation.
