History and Business of Company (this information may include date of incorporation) | |
Founded in 1984, Atmel Corp. (ATML) designs, makes and markets a broad range of high-performance non-volatile memory and logic integrated circuits. Its products are used in a wide range of applications, including telecommunications, computing, networking, consumer and automotive electronics, and the industrial markets. The company aims to leverage its expertise in non-volatile memories by combining them with microcontrollers, digital signal processors and other logic chips. Production and sales are global in scope. Geographic distribution of revenue in 2000 was as follows: U.S. 36%, Asia 34%, Europe 28%, and rest of world 2%. ATML sells to a diverse base of OEMs. Motorola accounted for 12% of sales in each of 2000 and 1999. ATML makes over 90% of its products at its own wafer fabrication plants. Headquartered in San Jose, CA, the company operates wafer fabs in Colorado Springs, CO; Irving, TX; Nantes, France; Rousset, France; Heilbronn, Germany; and North Tyneside, U.K. Wafer processing operations include BiCMOS, CMOS and Silicon Germanium (SiGe) technologies; the latter provides a cost-effective means of making RF (radio frequency) chips. There are four reportable segments, each of which requires different design, development and marketing resources to produce and sell semiconductors: Non-volatile memories (52% of 2000 sales), Application specific integrated circuits (ASICs, 26%), Logic (7%), and Atmel Wireless and Microcontroller Group (WMG, 15%). The non-volatile memory segment focuses on flash memories, erasable programmable read-only memories (EPROMs), and electrically erasable programmable read-only memories (EEPROMs). These types of products are generally standardized throughout the marketplace, and are thus subject to commodity pricing. The ASICs segment includes semi-custom gate arrays and cell- based integrated circuits, as well as full custom application- specific integrated circuits and smartcards. The company's ASICs products are targeted toward customers whose high-end applications require high-speed, high-density, or low or mixed-signal voltages. Logic products include microcontrollers, erasable programmable logic devices (EPLDs), and field programmable gate-arrays (FPGAs). Products are sold for a broad variety of consumer applications. WMG manufactures analog, microcontroller and specialty products for the automotive, telecom, consumer and industrial markets. A prime focus is high-frequency products for cordless and cellular phones, and two-way pagers. Remote controls for keyless entry for automobiles is another end-product example.
