History and Business of Company (this information may include date of incorporation) | |
Altera Corp. (ALTR) designs, manufactures and markets programmable logic devices, or PLDs, and associated development tools. ALTR was one of the first suppliers of complementary metal oxide semiconductor, or CMOS, programmable logic devices and is currently a global leader in this market. The company's CMOS-based PLDs are user-programmable semiconductor chips. Three principal types of digital integrated circuits are used in most electronic systems: microprocessors, memory and logic. Microprocessors are used for control and computing tasks, memory is used to store programming instructions and data, and logic is used to manage the interchange and manipulation of digital signals within a system. By using high performance devices, software development tools, and sophisticated intellectual property cores, system-on-a-programmable-chip (SOPC) solutions can be created with embedded processors, memory, and other complex logic together on a single PLD. In general, customers prefer products with lower supply voltages because they use less power and dissipate less heat, normally resulting in lower system cost. Lower supply voltages result from more advanced fabrication processes and yield higher performance at a lower cost. Thus, supply voltage correlates with product maturity: lower supply voltages represent newer products. ALTR does not directly manufacture its silicon wafers; they are produced using various semiconductor foundry wafer fabrication service providers. ALTR has its primary wafer supply arrangements with two semiconductor vendors: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and Sharp Corp. ALTR may negotiate additional foundry contracts or establish other sources of wafer supply as such arrangements become economically or technically necessary. The company's products serve a range of markets, including telecommunications, data communications, electronic data processing and industrial applications. ALTR markets its products in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, South America and Australia through a network of direct sales personnel and electronics distributors. Sales were $1,376.8 million in 2000, $836.6 million in 1999. Sales increased 64.6% in 2000. Increases in sales were primarily due to higher unit sales in all product categories. The increases in sales were partially offset by decreases in average unit selling prices. INCORPORATED in Delaware as a successor to a California company which was incorporated Jan. 9, 1984, as Altera Semiconductor Holding Corp.; present title adopted Oct. 23, 1984. Business was begun in June 1983, in the form of a limited partnership. October 1, 1994, acquired Intel Corp.'s Programmable Logic Device product line for $22,900,000 cash and 701,350 Common shares.
